Social determinants of health are the contexts and conditions in which people live their lives and that affect their health.
Health inequities are differences in the health outcomes between people, or groups of people, that are avoidable and are linked to these social determinants.
About Katrine Sauvé-Schenk
Katrine has been a registered Occupational Therapist since 2003, with experience across public and private sectors, including acute care, rehab, and community services. She holds a Master’s in Public Health from Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (2009), a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Ottawa (2018), and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in health service organization in 2019 with the Institut du Savoir Montfort and the Telfer School of Business. She is currently an associate professor at the University of Ottawa. Her research explores how social determinants—such as income, housing, and language minority status—impact rehabilitation and contribute to health inequities.

RAMIN BANIMAHDI
Rehabilitation Sciences Program
Ramin’s research interests include social determinants of health, cognitive problems resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI), housing and homelessness.
His PhD thesis focuses on the influence of social and healthcare transitions on the experience of homelessness for people who have had a TBI.

MAHSA MOHAMMADZADEH
Rehabilitation Sciences Program
Mahsa’s PhD thesis focuses on the influence of social determinants of health on participation in everyday life.
She is particularly interested in the challenges of return to work for people with spinal cord injuries.
